Kathy Duncan's artwork

Kathy Duncan

I was a Brownie at six years old and we had to draw something in a meeting. I can’t remember what I drew but all of a sudden there was an audible gasp from the Troup Leader. She told my mother I had talent and that I should get private lessons. So my mom did.

Fifty seven years later I am still trying to get people to gasp at my artwork. But I think that was the only time. Maybe the Art Teacher was the Troop Leader’s sister.

I have always been an oil painter by definition. I was taught how to paint in oils at the Corcoran Museum of Art when I was seventeen. I was into religious paintings then…like, “The Virgin Mary with Babe in arms”. Don’t know why.

Of course I was an Art Major in College. Seemed the easiest “A” I could get. I also had “promise”.

I now teach Art at Island High School after a long stint as a Recreation Manager for the City of San Pablo (paid more).

I have been in Alameda Women Artists Exhibits since about 1994. That makes me old but seasoned.

Now I paint things other than the Virgin Mary…which brings me to the train. For the more saucy of you the train steaming into the depot can mean a lot of things. It did for me. As for the boy. I thought it was such a tender picture of youth and innocence.

So there you have it.
