Water as Topographic Map

Joanne Clapp Fullagar

I have been an enthusiastic photographer since I snapped my first picture at age six with my father’s Argus C3. That grainy, underexposed portrait inspired me to pursue my lifelong love of photography. I am almost never without a camera, as riders on the Harbor Bay ferry can attest. (I have a large collection of photos of the Bay Bridge at dawn!)

While my husband accurately describes my photography as “people, bugs, and odd things,” my favorite subjects are reflections, distortions, and repeating shapes. Being truly present is what I appreciate most when I have my camera in my hands—looking through my viewfinder at a person who is willing to trust me, to be entirely in that moment with me as I click the shutter; seeing the colors shimmering through bubbles; noticing the reflections from the building on the water; stalking a bumblebee—all these are a joy.
