Studying and working abroad has been a catalyst to the work I do as an artist. I have become obsessed with the idea of culture and environment and its transformations. With so many shifts and changes that occur over time to people and places, it’s always interesting to see what stays and continues to endure and what gets left behind. My goal is to inform as well as to challenge others on different aspects of identity.
My own view of cultural and locational identity has been shaped by traveling and living in a variety of places. While I have had the opportunity to expand my global view, I have also been humbled to look within to also find resources. Painting and printmaking are the materials I use most often with these themes, although I have been inspired by a variety of non-traditional materials as the basis for my work.
Although sometimes my ideas of places and cultures overlap, I am currently working on 2 different sets of work that reflect my cultural ideas. One set deals with my identity as a “WASP” (White Anglo Saxon Protestant) while the other deals with my connection to various environments that have played a strong role in my spiritual development. Through the process of peeling away layers and becoming more authentic in my own truth, I am learning the power of personal transformation.
